WRF is committed to supporting initiatives designed to improve performance and enrich the experiences of students in the county’s public schools. These have included mentoring and tutoring in the Samuel Massie elementary school. Providing funding and resources to elementary and middle schools for initiatives to increase literacy skills through book distributions and creative approaches such as “eliminating the summer slide” which provides struggling readers in grades k-3 summer resources to prevent learning loss during the summer months through the use of family take-home literacy kits. Decades of research indicate that summer vacation increases the achievement gap in reading between low-income children and their middle-class peers.
